Welcome to Seed Manitoba 2026, the variety selection and growers’ source guide for Manitoba producers, compliments of Manitoba Agriculture, Manitoba Seed Growers’ Association, and Seed World Group. Seed Manitoba is a collaborative effort between industry, government, and producers to provide unbiased, local variety information from sites across Manitoba.
This year, the MCVET committee has decided to change publishers and adopt a refreshed, modern look for the publication, which we are excited to share.
Where Does the Data Come From?
Data is from replicated small plot trials grown in many locations throughout Manitoba and compiled over years. The main data collected is yield and protein, with other agronomic information in the “Variety Description” tables compiled from data submitted at the time the variety was registered. Some ratings in the “Variety Description” table, such as disease resistance, can change as pathogens change and reaction to disease races are better understood.
Our site contractors worked hard to have sites harvested in time for the data to be approved and published in Seed Manitoba. There was some yield and quality data that did not meet our publication deadlines; this data will be available in the Web Exclusive section of our website found at seedmb.ca.
Testing Locations and Site Years
Testing locations are chosen by the Manitoba Crop Variety Evaluation Team (MCVET) to represent the production area of each crop type. Crops with wide adaptation such as barley, fall rye, oat, spring and winter wheat, are planted at all sites. Crops like flax, field peas and lentils are only planted at locations where they are typically grown. Other crops like canola, corn, dry beans, soybeans, faba beans, and sunflowers are coordinated through their crop commodity associations and planted where they deem appropriate.
How Can Seed Manitoba Help with Variety Selection?
Seed Manitoba provides unbiased replicated data, giving producers, seed growers, and seed retailers more insight into variety performance throughout the province. Yield data is displayed by location to show local performance as well as summarized across locations and years.
Changes to Note
There are a few changes in Seed Manitoba 2026 to note: silage corn trials and durum wheat trials were absent in the 2024 growing season but have returned to the seed guide this year. Hemp was not tested in 2023-2025 growing seasons but expected to return in the 2026 season.
Thank you to all of the contributors to Seed Manitoba. This publication would not be possible without the sponsors, supporters, site contractors, the Manitoba Crop Variety Evaluation Team (MCVET), and the commodity groups that donate data. The team behind Seed Manitoba hopes that you find the information beneficial as you make variety decisions in the coming months.
